Too Tired to Think of a Clever Title...

  • Really a light week this week for new books. I got 52, naturally, and Birds of Prey, where it looks like I'll have to go for my Manhunter fix, since DC dropped the hammer on the title (which is unfortunate, but I sort of expected it; seems like anything without an X-, Spider-, Bat-, or Super- in the title doesn't last long...). And that was it.
  • 2 more weeks until Doom Patrol, vol. 5 and Seven Soldiers of Victory, vol. 4 (both written by Grant Morrison, coincidentally) hit the stands. I've really been enjoying the Doom Patrol stuff, since I was only tangentially aware of it as it was coming out (which seems odd to me, but I guess isn't surprising. I was a freshman in college, shopping at a store that, while it had a good selection, the owner treated it like a business/investment opportunity, rather than a hobby, so he was useless for recommending new books. Only tangentially related: he looked just like Abdullah the Butcher). I'm also looking forward to SSoV, so I can finish the story. Over at Comics Should be Good, someone (one of the Gregs?) reviewed all 30 issues of the series, 33 if you count Morrison's arc in JLA Classified, in the month of December. I didn't read the reviews, b/c it's really more of a long-form annotation, and I haven't finished the books yet. But by all accounts, it was a good review...
  • Don't know how I'm going to find time to complete all my classwork, my grading, my CLAD work, and watch all the dvds I got for Christmas and birthday. My Buddy Rob gifted me with the Brisco County, Jr. set for my b-day, which was VERY exciting. Can't wait to watch that!
  • My office is a complete disaster area. Nothing you can do about it (or that I can do about it for the moment, really), just wanted to share. Thanks for listening.
  • One of these days, I'll get the rest of my Starman sketches scanned in and continue posting them for your enjoyment!
  • You know, I really wish DC would continue collecting Ellis/Cassaday's Planetary. Additionally, I wish Ellis would write more Planetary. LOTS more. Too many loose ends remain untied. I know he's said his goal wasn't to tie off the series in a neat little bow, but there are too many things still unresolved. Maybe I'm just selfish that way. Anyway, there it is...

Finally...

...New comics come tomorrow! I missed last week's batch (out of town with my family), so I haven't read anything from last week, either. No 52, no Frontline, no nothing. Grrrr! Yay tomorrow! Yay new comics! Some quick reviews tomorrow, and maybe a few other things, too!

A few non-comic things...

This blog is, after all, titled "Mostly Comics Here." Therefore, we're going to talk about a few NCTs (Non-Comic Things).

1. Boise State's Fiesta Bowl victory: Holy Shit! If this doesn't go down as the best college football game ever, then I'll eat my hat. When Oklahoma scored on the interception to take the lead with less than two minutes to play, I turned it off in disgust. Of course, I turned back after the commercials, just in time to see Zabranski lead the Broncos down the field and score on that crazy hook-and-ladder play. I've just never seen anything like the final 5 minutes of that game and the overtime. Seriously, it's put every other game I've seen this year, college or pro, to shame. If you haven't seen it, you can download it (or sections of it, I think) from iTunes or from www.fox.com, I think.

2. I really wish I could get an extra week of Christmas vacation. Just because. I know there are some school districts in California that do it (Clovis Unified in Fresno comes immediately to mind, but I know they're not the only one).

3. Not technically an NCT, but mostly so because it's video game stuff, I got Lego Star Wars 2 and Ultimate Alliance for Christmas this year. Both games are excellent and highly recommended by me.

4. I'm in a football pool at work. It's nothing huge, me and 3 other forensics coaches, but I enjoy it. So week 16 rolls around, you may remember it, when the Texans beat the Colts? Yeah, I picked the Colts to win that game. It cost me a perfect record for the week. That's right, I went 15-1 that week. By FAR the best of anyone in the pool (and best of the season). That put me ahead by 5 games overall of my nearest competitor, Leo (over at East). Just wanted to share that. 15-1. Nice.

...And a Happy New Year!

I hope you all have a happy and joyous 2007!

It was a Merry Christmas here at Casa del Ziegler, between Christmas with my family on the 23rd and then having Mrs. Z.'s family over on the 25th, we were busy busy busy! Thankfully, Son and Daughter were ecstatic with the new bikes that Santa left for them (despite some engineering difficulties), and Mrs. Z. enjoyed her gift of a family trip to Disneyland (delivered on 12/17). As for me, it was a VERY Smallville Christmas, with Mrs. Z, Son, and Daughter each giving me one of the first 3 season sets. So I've got LOTS of Smallville to catch up on. Throw in Season 2 of Justice League and Season 1 of Justice League Unlimited, along with a few new video games (Ultimate Alliance and Lego Star Wars 2), and Superman: TAS, volume 3, I've got tons of TV to be watching. And on that note, I hope again that you all have a wonderful new year!
